This double rattle´s name is "Chanchan", handmade in the West Region of Cameroon (Bamileke)
The Chanchan is a traditional musical instrument used by the Bamileke people, who are part of the larger Grassfields ethnic groups in western Cameroon, Central Africa.
· Type: Idiophone (percussion instrument)
· Material: made from bamboo / wood.
· Structure: Typically consists of a set of small metal tubes or rods that are struck or shaken to produce rhythmic sounds.
· Playing Technique: It is played by striking it or shaking it, creating a rattling or metallic clinking sound that contributes to the rhythm section in Bamileke music ensembles.
· The Chanchan is primarily used in traditional ceremonies, including:
o Festivals
o Dances (like the famous Bamileke elephant dance)
o Rites of passage
o Funerals and royal ceremonies
· The instrument supports complex polyrhythmic patterns, which are central to Bamileke music traditions. It complements drums (such as the talking drum) and other percussive instruments.
· The Chanchan is more than a musical instrument; it plays a social and symbolic role in Bamileke culture. It helps communicate messages, maintain the rhythmic structure of dances, and enhance community cohesion through shared musical expression.
